Module Indicative Content
This module aims to examine significant theories of adolescent physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual development, and explore the place and methods of spiritual development for youth work and ministry in and beyond Christian settings. Human development theories are studied in an exploration of the progression from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. Physiological effects associated with puberty are discussed and applied within the context of youth work and ministry. Social development is studied in the context of an understanding of contemporary society and an awareness of the significant influence of peers and peer groups. Emotional development, self-esteem and identity are explored and linked to youth work and ministry practice. Cognitive and moral development is considered and attention is given to aspects of adolescent sexuality. Spiritual development theories are examined and methods for their application in youth work and ministry in and beyond Christian settings are assessed. The relationship between spirituality, faith, belief and doubt are explored. Christian concepts of human nature, conversion, nurture, accompanying and discipleship are investigated and boundaries established between Christian mission and spiritual development.
