Module Indicative Content
This module aims to provide theoretical frameworks for understanding issues relating to the status or role of young people in society and to outline models and methods of contacting, communicating with, and enhancing the development of young people in the context of contemporary culture and youth subcultures. The nature of society, culture, youth subcultures, symbols and power are explored and the processes, and effects, of socialisation, alienation and deviancy are investigated. Definitions, and potential effects of, postmodernity, globalisation and consumerism on young people are examined. Social policy and issues affecting young people, such as employment, citizenship, health and housing are explored. Consideration is then given to the consequences of cultural relevance, separation and conformity. Theological and sociological perspectives on mission, evangelism and social action are considered. Contemporary and Biblical models of missiology are examined and assessed for relevance to youth work and ministry in and beyond Christian settings.
