Module Indicative Content
This module aims to develop awareness, skills and attitudes to redress institutional or individual discrimination and actively work towards social inclusion. It begins with a theological and sociological introduction to justice, equality and freedom. Definitions for, and the sociology of, oppression, power and inequality are examined. The relationship between libertarianism, non-judgementalism and religious conviction are critiqued. Discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, gender, age, mental and physical disability and sexual behaviour/ orientation are examined and challenged. Students are helped to reflect on their own prejudicial attitudes, values and practices. Consideration is given to structural oppression and institutional discrimination both in and beyond Christian settings. Equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory legislation and responsibilities are examined and linked to fieldwork experiences. Strategies for identifying and challenging discrimination and oppression are assessed and, again, applied to the fieldwork placements. Finally, the development and implementation of equality of opportunity and social inclusion policies are considered.
