Module Indicative Content
This module aims to explore the philosophy, skills and practices of management, leadership and stewardship of resources necessary for professionals engaged in youth work and ministry in and beyond Christian settings. Students will draw upon the responsibility they have within their practice. It begins with an introduction to models of how organisations work. The nature, culture and systems of maintained and voluntary sector organisations are contrasted, with particular reference to youth organisations. Techniques for organisational development, managing change, motivation and culture are explored in youth work and ministry settings. The opportunities and challenges of networking, partnership, and inter-agency work are explored. The relationship between leadership and management is explored and a theological framework established for both. Leadership qualities, vision-setting, accountability and strategic planning in youth work and ministry are explored. Issues concerning power and control are investigated. The skills of effective managers, including time management, are identified, and administrative systems appraised. Attention is given to income generation, budget control, elementary accounting procedures and marketing of youth work and ministry.
