Module Indicative Content
This module aims to enable students to develop professional competence and experience in the supervision, training and staff development of volunteer and paid staff in youth work and ministry in and beyond Christian settings. It begins with an introduction to the concept of staff development which includes a critical review of appraisal and competency-based assessment. Models of supervision are then introduced with explanation of the techniques of both managerial and non-managerial approaches. During the module, students are given opportunity for on-going practice of supervision techniques. Consideration is given to the purposes and practices relevant to the recruitment, selection and induction of paid and voluntary staff. Theories of motivation are introduced and applied in the context of the management of youth work and ministry staff teams. A range of approaches to training are considered in the light of theories about how people learn, develop their skills and may be empowered. Methods in the design, delivery and evaluation of training programmes are explored and opportunity is given for peer feedback on training practice. The theory and practice of team work and team management is considered and theological reflections are offered on the use of employees and volunteers in Christian youth ministry.
