Module Indicative Content
This module aims to develop competence and experience in working with individuals to facilitate their personal, social, emotional and spiritual development. It introduces the concept of pastoral care and focuses on skill training processes. Students consider a range of issues that affect some young people, such as: relationship breakdowns, anxiety and anger, sex, sexuality, sexual orientation and abuse; grief, bereavement and illness; psychiatric illness, depression; self-harm and eating disorders; and addictive behaviour. An introduction is given to basic counselling skills and different approaches to counselling are explored. Practical training in listening skills is offered. One to one relationships are further discussed through an introduction to the theories of transactional analysis, and also in the context of mentoring young people. Professional issues such as setting boundaries, referral, confidentiality, safe practice and recording are identified. These approaches to relationship building and intervention skills are also examined from a Christian perspective and an introduction is given to pastoral theology. Students are helped to develop their own holistic approach to pastoral care interventions and one to one support of young people. The module concludes by considering methods to develop and support peer counsellors.
