Assignment (1): A written assignment exploring own work with a particular aspect of popular culture / art form in the light of the theoretical understanding gained within the module. (Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4)

Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to examine how young people's identity is shaped by and expressed through popular culture, and to further enable students to develop tools necessary for interpreting culture. It will employ sociological theory to examine how young people's worldviews and sense of identity are influenced by a variety of artistic forms expressed through popular culture. Various art forms, including various films, popular music, fashion and advertisements will be discussed and analysed for ideological influence and theological resonance. Ways in which youth workers may employ a variety of popular art forms with young people for developmental and educational purposes (social, moral, political and spiritual) will also be examined and assessed. The significance of symbolism within young people's worldview and sense of identity will be explored, and an understanding of its place within practice will be developed.

Module Learning Strategies
150 hours, of which 15 will involve interactive lectures, student led seminars and presentations, group discussions of learning materials, group discussions and reflections on particular art forms, guided reflection on particular art forms, TV and film criticism. There will be 64 fieldwork hours, and the rest will be independent study.
