Module Details
Indicative Content
This module will cover concepts of professionalism, providing an understanding of attitudes and behaviours, the role of the Health and Care Professions Council and their standards of proficiency, standards of conduct, performance and ethics. It will also provide an insight into a Health and Care Professions Council Fitness to Practice process using interprofessional education where possible. Evidence Based Practice will be introduced and an introduction to continuing professional development and lifelong learning.

Legal and Ethical Factors will also be included, such as Health and Safety legislation, duty of care, consent, negligence, capacity, Frazer guidelines, the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act, confidentiality and safeguarding. The concepts of accountability and responsibility will be discussed with the boundaries of practice alongside inequalities, privilege, intersectionality, beliefs, attitudes, values, assumptions. Whilst also providing awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion, race, culture and ethnicity, rights, and dignity.

Communication will also be a key element to this module educating you on the importance of self-awareness, barriers to communication, making every contact count, verbal and non-verbal communication skills (including academic writing), active listening, empathy and how to deal with conflict. This will also coincide with an introduction to human factors, human error and the impact on patient care.

Learning strategies for this module will include a mixture of simulation, lectures, presentations, seminars, group work, independent study, games, quizzes and case studies, both live and recorded

This modules focus is to introduce you to the professional context of the Operating Department Practitioner including concepts of professionalism, legal and ethical factors, and communication. This module will also give you an introduction into essay writing and assist in developing your academic study skills and writing at degree level.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
The assessment for this module is an essay based on a case study that will address all four learning outcomes. The essay title or theme will be provided by the module leader.

This essay will take a recursive approach, by this it means that you will have the opportunity to submit 500 words of the main body of your essay through a formative gateway. This will be marked, and you will be given feedback which will include three points that you can use to improve the work
