Anatomy and Physiology of key body systems including, but not limited to :-

Respiratory and Cardiovascular System
Gastrointestinal and Genito Urinary systems
Musculoskeletal system
Endocrine system

Understand normal physiological parameters and assessment.

Pharmacological principles with an introduction to drugs used within the perioperative environment.

Insight into genomics, cells, tissues, and organs with consideration of immunity and a base level understanding for blood products and its components.

There will be key considerations to peri-operative risks such as venous thromboembolism, hypothermia and pressure care prevention, surgical sight infection and how to apply evidence-based practice.

This module will also cover areas such as sensory impairment, theatre etiquette and patient safety with an insight into the importance of human factors and ergonomics.

Assessment 1

You will be required to complete a short Multiple Choice Question exam on the anatomy and physiology of the human body and basic drugs used in anaesthesia lasting 30 minutes. (Learning Outcome 1)

Assessment 2
You will be required to sit a short answer exam focused upon pharmacological interventions in the operating department and associated safety considerations. (Learning Outcomes 2 & 3) This examination will last 60 minutes.

To meet the module requirements all elements must be passed.

Formative Assessment Opportunities:

You will be given the opportunity to complete a mock MCQ exam to identify your knowledge gaps to help you prepare for the summative exams.

You will be given the opportunity to complete a mock short answer exam paper.

Learning strategies for this module will include a mixture of lectures, seminars, group work, quizzes and independent study.

This module will take you through the key concepts of anatomy and physiology, covering all the major systems of the human body. You will be taught via a combination of on-site and online classes, using various resources and materials. This will include the use of pre-learning materials, self-directed learning packages, and the use of 3D anatomy websites and technologies.

Additionally, we will be exploring pharmacology, learning about drugs commonly used in Operating Department Practice.
