This module introduces you to the concept of research from its core principles through to the application of research findings to health and social care settings. Key areas covered:
Defining research
Quantitative and qualitative research strategies
Research design
The relationship between research and clinical evidence
Data collection
Recruitment of participants and sampling
Data analysis
Research ethics
Presenting research findings
Judging the quality of research
Critical appraisal

3500-word evaluative research methods assignment (100%), meeting learning outcomes 1, 2 & 3
A critical appraisal of the research methods used in two research papers (students will be provided with pre-determined papers, based on quantitative and qualitative strategies).
Due to the professional nature of this programme, no internal compensation will be allowed for this module.
Formative Feedback
You will be entitled to 1 hour’s personal tutorial (dates to be advised by Module Leader)
You will be able to bring an essay plan comprising of 1 A4 Size 12 font to your tutorial, this is the only formative work that will be reviewed. Please note marking is anonymous and the marker may not be the same person who has given tutorial support.

This module introduces you to key concepts in research, addressing its core principles through to the application of evidence to health and social care settings. You will explore the relationship between research and clinical practice; the link between research principles and techniques; and the basis of quantitative and qualitative strategies. You will evaluate the key dimensions of research designs, including methodology, data collection, sampling, data analysis, research ethics, and the presentation of research findings. You will also develop critical appraisal skills.
