Indicative Content
Within this module you will look at the skills required to develop your role as a student Operating Department Practitioner and the care provided to patients. Opportunities will be provided to learn new skills in a safe environment. These skills will then be further developed in clinical placement. Skills covered will include cannulation, 3 and 12 lead Electrocardiogram (ECG)and catheterisation.
An overview of dialysis, renal transplant, and bladder scanning will be provided. Patient safety initiatives will be discussed looking at ‘Stop Before You Block’, major haemorrhage, emergency algorithms, shock and fluid replacement.
Invasive monitoring will be introduced looking at arterial lines and central venous pressure (CVP) lines.
Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) anatomy will be covered, considering shared airway whilst also emphasising difficult airway and human factors and ergonomics relating to the operating department.
An introduction to Integrated Care Systems (ICS) will also be part of this module.

Learning strategies for this module will include a mixture of simulation, clinical skills, lectures, seminars, group work, independent study, games, case studies and service user involvement

Special Admissions Requirements
Students must have completed level 4 modules in accordance with the programme specification of their professional course, meeting the universities regulations for progression to level 5.
MODULE ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
You will be required to complete two 15 -minute. Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) stations and must pass both to be successful with this module. You will be assessed on 2 scenarios from a selection advised by the module leader.
Prior to the summative assessment you will have the opportunity to complete a mock OSCE under exam conditions (one to one). You will also have the opportunity to complete OSCE practice in groups both tutor and student led.
