Module Details
Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to provide a contextualisation of the structure, composition, principles and concepts of management theory in applied settings. Specifically the student will consider:

Traditional versus contemporary approaches to management and leadership.

Management skills e.g. communication, counselling, delegation and empowerment, conflict handling, managing self, time management, stress management, emotional intelligence, psychological contract, coaching and mentoring

Groups, Teams and the Individual

Operational Planning, e.g. levels of planning in the organisation, objective setting, operational planning, management by objectives, problem solving and decision making, managing and chairing meetings, monitoring and evaluation, planning in a changing environment.
Module Learning Strategies
The learning strategy for this module requires students to commit to 150 learning hours. The module will be delivered through a mix of practical/theory sessions with elements of lecturer led input in the form of lecturers and discussions in seminar sessions

The use of an exam will provide preparation for students aiming to progress to one of the Staffordshire University Business School Masters awards, which has a number of different exam assessments. It will be based on a case study, which reinforces the overall contextualisation of the module.

Module Additional Assessment Details
An individual presentation weighted at 25%. A one hour exam weighted at 75%.

(1) A one hour written examination (LOs 1,2,3,4)
(2) An individual oral presentation (10 minutes) on the application of management concepts and principles within a specific industry. In addition, there will be up to five minutes questioning by the tutors to verify students' understanding of the learning outcomes tested. This should be supplemented by the sub mission of presentation notes, any visual aids and other relevant material (LO1 & 4)

Students are required to pass all elements of the assessment for this module.
