ASSESSMENT DETAILS
An assignment of 3500 words (100%) (learning outcomes 1 - 3).
The assignment will encompass examine the strategic business environment in which the road freight sector of logistics operates including demonstrating an understanding of how the legal framework impinges on its strategic business planning activities, with reference to competitive practices, quality standards and effectiveness/efficiency of operations.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module will give students an overview of the road transport sector. It looks at the purpose of strategic transport planning and some of the general operational processes, quality requirements and legislation that impacts on the strategic planning of operating centres. Resources, costs and service considerations will also be explored in line with the effective leadership and management of the business organisation.
The module will specifically include:
• The business processes and guidance relating to the strategic management of logistics road freight operations within the leaners country
• Principles and theory of quality standards linked to strategic planning, theory of competition and the broader business environment.
• Theory and models of business/vehicle operation and licensing including broader strategic business responsibilities in this context
• Corporate Social Responsibility and corporate image linked to strategic planning of national and international operations.
• Environmental impact and carbon footprint considerations linked to strategic planning, market position and competitive development.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
The learning strategy for this module requires students to commit 150 learning hours (including assessment). This will include 36 hours of class support and 114 hours of independent and self directed study.
The class sessions will include formal lectures, case study analysis and group discussions based on specific research tasks given to students during delivery sessions. Students will be encouraged to integrate their research and experiences with new knowledge and skills developed in the classroom as the module progresses.
