Module Indicative Content
This module examines the principles of management. It looks at topics including different ways to manage, what is the difference between being a manager and being a leader and ensuring effective management. It also looks at how to get the most out of both teams and individuals, including how to plan and control activities.
- Approaches to management and leadership (Fayol, Taylor, Handy, Peters, Moss-Kanter)
- Introductory management skills eg leadership, communication, counselling, delegation and empowerment, conflict handling, managing self, time management
- Individual: personality traits, characteristics, perception
- Introduction to Planning: levels of planning in the organisation (corporate, business, operational), objective setting, operational planning, management by objectives, problem solving and decision making, managing and chairing meetings, monitoring and evaluation, culture.
- Management control techniques and mechanisms
Module Learning Strategies
The learning strategy for this module requires students to commit 150 learning hours (including assessment). This will include 24 hours of class support and 126 hours of independent and self directed study. The class sessions will include formal lectures, case study analysis and group discussions based on student experiences in the subject area. Students will be encouraged to integrate their work based experiences with new knowledge and skills developed in the classroom as the module progresses.
