Module Learning Strategies
The learning strategy for this module requires students to commit 300 learning hours (including assessment). This will include 72 hours of class support, comprising 48 hrs tutor led lecture programme, 24 hrs tutor-led practical and workshop programme and 228 hours of independent and self directed study.
The class sessions will include formal lectures, case study analysis and group discussions based on student experiences in the subject area. Students will be encouraged to integrate their work based experiences with new knowledge and skills developed in the classroom as the module progresses.
Students are expected to undertake practical work, involving the selection of suitable fitness tests, administer the tests selected according to current protocols and procedures and analyse the results and give appropriate feedback.
Module Indicative Content
Training & Fitness
This module introduces the principles of training. The training and assessment of the various components of fitness are examined. The practical application of the planning, implementation and evaluation of personal fitness programmes is examined. Students are required to demonstrate the practical assessment of various components of fitness. They then use knowledge of training principles and the physiological changes made by the body following exercise regimes to plan a personal training programme designed to meet specific outcomes.
Fitness Testing
The module also provides an introduction to the concepts of healthy life styles and the fitness requirements for people considering a career in public services.
Students will investigate how they would assess an individual's fitness and what advice may be offered regarding personal fitness programmes.
