Module Details
Module Indicative Content
This module looks at the management principles and applications related to the construction industry. In particular it focuses on:
Management - Established definitions of management, principles of management such as forecasting, planning, organising, motivating, controlling, co-ordinating and communicating.
Management of human resources - individual and group motivational needs, leadership, concepts of team behaviour, role of employers' organisations and unions, legal framework.
Principles of organisation structure - direct line, lateral, functional, span of control, concepts of responsibility, authority, delegation and accountability.
Corporate organisation - mission, strategy, corporate planning, policy and objective, centralised versus decentralised organisations, project based organisation, roles of professions in project teams, team structures and team working.
Module Learning Strategies
Delivery will comprise lectures (12 hours), tutorials (12 hours) and independent study. Learners will be encouraged to read an appropriate range of textbooks and library/Internet source material relating to the content of this module and the industry?s activity.

Independent study and guided learning will support each session. You can expect to spend around 24 hours in preparation for the workshops. Self tuition through a Study Pack is expected to take approximately 12 hours and access to tutor and work-based guidance will take place. It is expected that in-house support will facilitate the learning environment and you could expect to spend about 24 hours on work-based learning. Additionally you can expect to utilise some web-based learning materials for about 24 hours as part of your independent learning, in addition to the study pack time.
