General Admission Requirements for B.Ost/ M.Ost programme.

This module aims to lay the foundations for a range of skills upon which students can build during their training and professional lives. The theme of `research' will be used as a vehicle for the teaching of the module's three strands, which are:

1. Integrative and Supportive Skills
- Study skills - self-directed learning/essay writing/library skills/
- nterpersonal and communication skills
- Self-reflection and evaluative skills
- Integration and transference of knowledge and skills between modules

2. Research Skills
- Importance of research for evidence-based practice
- Comprehension and synoptic skills
- Critical reading skills
- Introduction to data collection, presentation and analysis including simple statistics; use of Microsoft Excel

3. Professional Skills
- Definitions of `professionalism'
- Identifying `professional skills'

Threading through the module is the Integrated Personal Portfolio, a self-directed learning tool, which aims to encourage reflection, evaluation and self-development

The `Reflection, Evidence and Professional Skills 1 Study Guide' will specify pre-lecture activities for each session and will require increasing self-directed learning as the module progresses. Most sessions will be based around one or more relevant research papers and/or a practical research activity.

Reading Research (Summative)
30% Comprehension and Comment - group discussion of selected research papers and individual structured write-up (750 words)

30% 10 minute presentation plus 1500 words (+/- 10%)

Integrated Personal Portfolio (Summative)
40% Semi-structured portfolio of reflective observations and personalised Learning Outcomes

ALL elements must be passed for successful module completion.

Library Skills Portfolio - Portfolio of information evidencing familiarisation with Library Services and Referencing software

CONTACT HOURS (33):
Student contact time will predominantly take the form of workshops and practical activities to develop skills and provide formative feedback via group and class discussion. Each session will commence with a brief lecture to consolidate pre-lecture self-directed study, assess student difficulties and introduce practical activities.
