This module aims to lay the foundations for a range of skills upon which students can build during their training and professional lives. These skills are categorised as:
1. Integrative and Supportive Skills
- Study skills - self-directed learning/essay writing/library skills
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- Self-reflection and evaluative skills
- Integration and transference of knowledge and skills between modules
2. Research Skills
- Importance of research for evidence-based practice
- Comprehension and synoptic skills
- Critical reading skills
- Introduction to data collection, presentation and analysis including descriptive statistics
- Reference management, Boolean searching
3. Professional Skills
- Definitions of 'professionalism'
- Identifying 'professional skills'

Threading through the module is the Personal & Professional Portfolio, a self-directed learning tool, which aims to encourage reflection, evaluation and self-development
The Personal and Professional Development Skills 1 session notes will specify pre-lecture activities for each session and will require increasing self-directed learning as the module progresses. Many sessions will be based around one or more relevant research papers and/or a practical activity.
