Module Indicative Content
The aims of this module are to provide the student with the underpinning knowledge and skill awareness necessary for the foundations of paramedic practice that is timely, responsive and appropriate in paramedic practice. This will be supported by the awareness of evidence based practice including government legislation, national and local policy and guidelines.
The student will study the following core content;
- Introduction to Pathology of disease & Trauma Systems include, cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, renal, endocrine, reproductive systems relating to practice
- An introduction to minor and major trauma & (including trauma emergencies, chest, head, abdominal & musculoskeletal trauma, thermal injuries, drowning, electrocution)
- Pain assessment & management, Pain assessment tools
- Chemical, radiological, biological and nuclear incidents
- Multidisciplinary team and collaborative working
- Communication skills
- Clinical Guidelines and protocols
- Reflection and reflective models
- Safe guarding children- awareness of child protection & children at risk of abuse
- Introduction to assessment & holistic age appropriate care of children with altered health needs linked to the systems of life
- Recognition and management of the sick child.
- Communicating with the child and family
- Awareness & of individuals at risk of or exhibiting aggression and violence
- Awareness of acute mental distress, mental health disorders, self harm, attempted suicide
- Mental Health assessment tools
- Awareness of health problems with learning disability groups
- Recognition and managing own stress
- Age related and chronic conditions including multi-pathology of illness
- Loss and bereavement
- Coping strategies for sudden death
- Falls in the elderly

A 3000 words case study in relation to a clinical incident and paramedic practice development (100% of grade) (assessing all LO's)
