Service Improvement Report

Weighting: 100%

Assesses all module learning outcomes.

You will produce a 2,500-word Service Improvement Report that explores an area of pre-hospital practice where patient care, efficiency, safety or experience could be enhanced. The report should be written in a clear, structured format and include the below elements. Each element will form part of the marking rubric and you will be provided with a single grade for the overall piece:

1. Evidence Review (supports MLO1)

Select one improvement area and provide a concise, critical summary of the research evidence that relates to it. Explain how this evidence currently informs (or should inform):

clinical guidelines

protocols

decision-making in paramedic practice

This section should remain focused and practical — not a mini-dissertation.

2. Patient-Centred Considerations (supports MLO2)

Draw on social, public health or patient-experience research to show how patient needs, preferences, inequalities or lived experiences shape the improvement area.

This can include:

accessibility issues

communication barriers

cultural considerations

health inequalities

public behaviour or attitudes

The emphasis is: How does this help paramedics deliver better person-centred care?

3. Systems Analysis (supports MLO3)

Using a simple systems-improvement tool (choose one), briefly analyse why the problem exists:

Process map

Fishbone diagram

5 Why’s

Driver diagram

The aim is to show, in a manageable way, where the system breaks down and where improvement could occur.

4. Leadership Application (supports MLO4)

Choose one leadership theory and explain:

why it is suitable for leading this improvement

how it would support stakeholder engagement

how it might help overcome resistance or barriers

Keep this section practical and relevant to paramedic teams.

5. Improvement Recommendation

Provide a clear, achievable and realistic improvement proposal, supported by the evidence, systems analysis and leadership approach you have discussed.

Rationale:

This assessment enables learners to demonstrate the essential skills required of an autonomous, reflective, evidence-informed paramedic: using research to enhance care, understanding patient and public perspectives, analysing real clinical systems and applying leadership principles to propose credible service improvements.

INDICATIVE CONTENT
Advancing Professional Paramedic Practice

1. Evidence Appraisal and Influence on Clinical Practice

Critical appraisal of quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods research.

Evaluating research quality, trustworthiness and applicability to pre-hospital contexts.

How evidence informs national clinical guidelines, protocols, decision support tools and service improvement priorities.

Translating research findings into safe, evidence-informed paramedic practice.

2. Social and Public Research to Support Patient-Centred Care

Social determinants of health, public behaviour research and population health data.

Health inequalities, access, cultural competence and patient experience evidence.

Applying social and public research to enhance shared decision-making and person-centred care in pre-hospital settings.

Using evidence to tailor communication, manage expectations and mitigate barriers to effective care.

3. Healthcare Systems Analysis and Quality Improvement

Introduction to systems thinking in healthcare and pre-hospital environments.

Tools for systems analysis (process mapping, root-cause analysis, fishbone diagrams, driver diagrams).

Identifying variation, inefficiencies, risk and unmet need within care pathways.

Principles of quality improvement and measuring change in paramedic services.

4. Leadership Theory and Application in Paramedic Practice

Critical examination of leadership theories (transformational, situational, authentic, distributed).

Strengths and limitations of leadership models in contemporary pre-hospital care.

Leading change, influencing culture and engaging stakeholders during improvement initiatives.

Human factors, safety leadership and creating conditions for effective team performance.

Content covers evidence appraisal, patient-centred research, systems analysis and leadership application to prepare students for autonomous, reflective, improvement-focused paramedic practice.

WEB DESCRIPTOR
Develop the analytical, systems-focused and leadership capabilities required for paramedic practice.

This module enables you to critically appraise research evidence, explore patient-centred insights from social and public research, and analyse healthcare systems to identify opportunities for service improvement. You will evaluate leadership theories and apply them to real-world challenges, preparing you to influence change, enhance care quality and contribute to the future design of pre-hospital services
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Learning in this module focuses on developing analytical, evaluative and leadership capabilities required for contemporary paramedic practice. Teaching will be delivered through lead lectures, seminars, case-based discussions and interactive workshops that explore research appraisal, systems analysis and leadership theory. These sessions will support you in critically evaluating evidence, engaging with patient-centred research and understanding the wider organisational factors that shape pre-hospital care.

Digital learning resources within the VLE will introduce key concepts and support independent study, enabling taught sessions to concentrate on applying theory to real-world challenges and service improvement opportunities. Workshops will guide you through practical tools for analysing healthcare systems and assessing quality, while seminars will encourage debate, comparison of leadership approaches and consideration of their relevance to current paramedic practice.

Throughout the module, you will be expected to take increasing ownership of your learning, drawing on research, policy, patient experience and professional standards to inform your understanding. Formative feedback opportunities and reflective tasks will help you refine your improvement proposal and develop the confidence to apply evidence, systems thinking and leadership principles to pre-hospital care.
