Performance Portfolio (100%) Rehearse and perform in two negotiated contrasting acting roles within a musical theatre context as follows: (a) a piece running to a suggested duration of 10 minutes, to be performed in a workshop setting (b) a role cast as part of a full musical theatre production Your performance work must be supported by evidence of critical evaluation, and practical development of skills and techniques as a consequence of your own reflective practise and constructive feedback from others [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4]

MODULE INDICATIVE CONTENT
The fundamentals of the most relevant acting styles within contemporary theatre are covered in this module in a series of theory lectures, workshop rehearsals, an assessed workshop performance and a full musical performance. Through review of the work of others, this module breaks down the principles of acting within a musical theatre context and the contextual implications for the performer. You will explore the theorised praxis established by, for example, Stanislavski and Brecht and will consider a range of iconic works representative within musical theatre.
Practical application features heavily within this module and you will seek to experiment with your character development through research and rehearsal, with a view to creating a role(s) that stretches your creative potential. Your understanding will be expressed through your engagement in 1:1 and group discussions as well as your acting ability. You will be expected to respond in a positive proactive manner to the challenges of workshop performances which contrast classical and contemporary styles, integrating theory to practice in relation to the theatre company. In this, the theatre company may comprise of supporting students and peers, the director, and associated staff.
You will be expected to show you understand how previous and contemporary acting techniques sit within the Musical Theatre genre, both within musical libretti and through song as an extension of the spoken voice.
MODULE LEARNING STRATEGIES
Learning in this module will be facilitated through a mix of theory and practice. Lectures and workshops will be fundamental to the exploration of the work of others as a vehicle to demonstrate and discuss the methods available to you as a developing actor. Practical activities will enable you to experiment in the application of theory, and teach you how to compare and contrast styles and approaches. Your learning will be supported by frequent formative feedback from tutors and peers, as well as your own reflective practice. Activities throughout the module will typically include: • theory lectures • review of the work of others (acting in musical theatre, styles and approaches) • acting workshops • practical participation in the rehearsal and performance of selected plays • tutorials, • 1:1 and group discussions • group critique, • problem solving activities • independent research
