[Learning Outcome 1, 2, 3, 4]

Formative assessment
Observation of integrated acting, singing and dance skills demonstrated through participation in workshops for the purpose of informing personal development.
Module Indicative Content
This level 5 module is designed to develop your confidence and ability to respond to the challenges of performing in musical theatre. It builds on the learning that took place at level 4, particularly the skills you developed in ‘Acting for Musical Theatre’, ‘Vocal Studies’ and ‘Dance and Movement’. This module however places greater emphasis on your ability to effectively integrate skills, present yourself as what is known as a triple threat: able to exhibit the three skills necessary to excel as a musical theatre performer.

Through this module you will focus on the continuity of characterisation through a chronological sequence of scenes from a book musical, with the intention of developing and maintaining character through dialogue, song and choreography as part of a group excerpt performance. Through the individually selected excerpt which may include solo, duet, trio, quartet or ensemble selections, should demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of your own skills, how to showcase these skills within musical theatre for the purpose of the selection of audition material, casting requirements and subsequent performance.

You will embark on research into the pieces and your individual characters so that both an accurate, believable portrayal is delivered and maintained across multiple performance disciplines (Acting Through Song / Acting Through Dance / Triple Threat), and the writer's intention of the narrative within the selected piece (and its dramatic purpose in situ within the piece) is demonstrated.

You are expected to commit to the rehearsal process and final performances, working in a professional manner with cast members and the creative team. You will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of health and safety including appropriate application of warm-up activities for vocal and dance aspects. Each performance should demonstrate critical reflection, which in turn should inform your continual development of skills across your disciplines (i.e. acting, singing and/or dance).
Module Learning Strategies
Learning in this module should build on the knowledge and skill that you developed at level 4 of your studies and the emphasis is placed on practical work, in order that you can explore techniques and processes with greater breadth and depth and become more proficient in integrating disciplines. You will learn by doing, and will have the opportunity to explore and experiment so that you may discover ways of working with methods that not only suit the task, but also suit your individual needs and work best for you in an increasingly professional capacity.

Active learning will be facilitated through workshops including demonstrations and studio tutorials, with teachers and visiting practitioners. However, there will be an increasing expectation that you work imaginatively, with independence and responsibility. There will be a mix of individual and collaborative learning, in-class and outside of timetabled sessions.

Learning will be facilitated through
- Advanced acting, singing and dance classes
- Workshops focussing on integrating disciplines, informed by ongoing research and ideas development
- Group discussion including negotiation of performance material
- Individual and group rehearsal and musical theatre performance
- Tutorials
- Group critique
- Reflective practice and target setting
- One to one tutor reviews
