A dissertation will consist of approximately 7500 words

This is the Dissertation module. As such, the content is not strictly predetermined. Our experience has been that students develop more successful dissertation projects when these are based on one semester of detailed textual work conducted as part of a group. In the new model presented here, students will develop their dissertation projects on the basis of work undertaken for another module. Normally, this will be one of the Holistic Text modules taken in semester 4 or 5. With the approval of tutors it may be another module. The project may involve a substantial development of work already submitted for the assessment of the Philosophical Text module (not merely an extension of work already submitted), or wholly new work on any related topic agreed in consultation with the relevant tutor.

Students will spend one semester following one of the Philosophical Text modules. Having identified a theme for their dissertation, students will normally then divide their second semester between individual study, individual tutorials and group tutorials with other students working on related themes. Tutors who have led the Philosophical Text module on which the student has based the dissertation will normally be responsible for supervision.

Texts will depend on the nature of the research project.
