Module Indicative Content
The module provides an introduction to the 35mm SLR camera technologies and techniques. You will be given instruction in the 35mm film and digital camera, analogue colour printing; print finishing; digital camera input and output controls; introduction to the computing workshops; introduction to Adobe Photoshop CS3, stages 1 & 2. You will be taught through a mixture of lectures, workshops, tutorials and a supervised Field Trip to a location in the UK. Instruction will be given with examples in the basics of lens aperture, depth of field, exposure and the latent image, filtration, optimisation of shutter speed, digital menu optimisation, film selection and film speed, lens selection, on-camera flash lighting, darkroom colour printing, basic Adobe Photoshop CS3 image enhancement strategies.
You will be working to produce a portfolio of photographs and a carefully researched, illustrated and produced technical manual for assessment.
Module Additional Assessment Details
You will present the following coursework for assessment:
1. A portfolio of photographs that clearly demonstrate your understanding and competence in using the taught photographic techniques (Learning Outcomes 1 & 2).
2. A Technical Manual. This will be word processed, illustrated and carefully produced to demonstrate your understanding and competence in researching photographic techniques and their use by established photographers from the canon of photography. (Learning Outcome 3).
