A class test of one hour and 30 minutes (100%)

INDICATIVE CONTENT
The core aim of the module is to ensure that photojournalism students have knowledge and understanding of the complex web of the legal issues and constraints affecting professional practice. Specific topics covered include contempt, copyright, confidentiality, reporting restrictions, covering court affairs, The Press Complaints Commission (PCC) code of practice and ethical considerations. The curriculum is constructed to provide students with the ability to apply their knowledge of the law to specific situations commonly encountered by photojournalists and press photographers. The curriculum will prepare students for the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) examination Media Law for Photographers. Assessment will require students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the law as it applies to photojournalism and press photography through contextual application. This will be in time-constrained test conditions to replicate professional practice and in preparation for professional external examination.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Lecture, workshop and seminars = 24 hours
Classes will include a mixture of lecture elements, workshop practice, group discussion and trial tests.
Independent learning = 126 hours
Students will be expected to gain a thorough knowledge of the law as it applies to photojournalism and press photography using advised sections of essential texts and Blackboard content and develop a broader grasp of the law as it applies to journalism overall through wider advised reading.
