Module Indicative Content
Theory and the making of photographs go together. In critical thought about photography theory is a mixed body of discourse and writing largely drawn from other disciplines. In different ways they offer persuasive views that challenge 'common-sense' assumptions about the medium and re-orientate interpretation and understanding in thinking about photography and the practice of intentionally producing photographs. Modernist and post-modern written and visual texts considered in the module could originate from philosophy, political theory, aesthetics, linguistics, literary theory, anthropology, film studies, gender studies, for example.
The module offers opportunities to develop your understanding, writing and photographic skills thinking and practising photography. You will be asked to consider relevant written and visual texts, debate the issues raised in lectures and seminars, offer a seminar presentation and either produce a theoretically grounded portfolio of photography or write a critical essay. It will appeal to students pursuing a career as photographers, artists, curators, writers, critics, journalists and academic professionals from a wide variety of disciplines.
