Module Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate in depth knowledge of legislation, policy and practice utilised by the police in relation to the investigation of complex cases and the conduct of international investigations.

Module Additional Assessment Details
Group Presentation: Students are required to conduct group research into the effectiveness of MAPPA to deliver public protection and together present findings (15 minutes) to a group of peers and a member of the teaching team. Presentation can either be face to face or live video streamed. The audience will have opportunity to question the presenters about their findings. This assessment will address learning outcome 4.

The reflective diary will allow the student to critically analyse how public protection incidents and complex crimes are managed and investigated. Students will show understanding of the topic and ability to critically consider how these could be viewed through relevant policies, procedures and strategies. This assessment will address learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3.
Module Indicative Content
This module enhances the learner’s understanding of public protection practices and the investigation of complex crimes including where there is a digital or international element.


This module incorporates all the learning outcomes and indicative content from the College of Policing, Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship Curriculum for the following areas:
Public Protection:
2.1 – 2.3 Inclusive.
4.1 – 5.3 Inclusive.
7.1 – 7.3 Inclusive.
Digital Policing:
1.1 – 3.1 Inclusive.
Conducting Investigations:
1.1 – 6.6 Inclusive.

The below is a brief summary of what the content includes:
Investigating public protection incidents.
MAPPA and the management of offenders.
Links between serious organised crime and public protection.
Effects of media coverage on public protection strategy.
Types of complex digitally enabled crime, their impact and investigative strategies used.
Difference between 'volume and priority' crime and 'serious and complex' crime and the relevance to the investigative process.
Use of intelligence sources in complex investigation.
Conducting international and European investigations.
Concepts of memory and its impact on the interview process.
Module Learning Strategies
This module utilises blended learning strategies, including the delivery of lectures (face to face and distance), small group tutorial sessions, face to face and online peer discussion together with digitally aided independent study. A total of 40 hours protected learning time will delivered over the course of the first week followed by a period of operational deployment in a work area associated with investigation and/or intelligence management. This period of operational deployment is utilised to undertake relevant work-based learning and guided independent study prior to completement of assessment at the end of the module.

Academic support (face to face and online) will be available throughout the module.

There will be regular formative knowledge checks and other sessions of formative assessment.
