Module Details
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module enhances the learners understanding of criminology and crime prevention. It allows them to consider concepts and theories associated with vulnerability, risk, victim and offender.

Indicative Content:
Critically review the constitutional role of the police in contemporary society and the wider criminal justice system
Explore crime prevention theories and strategies
Assess the strengths and weakness of different policing models in relation to crime/victimisation and the public including evidenced based policing.
Evaluate the benefits that a greater understanding of sociology and criminology can have on operational policing and decision making with reference to specific initiatives.
Understand concepts and theories of victims and offenders
Explain the psychological impact of abuse on victims
Explain how personal attitudes, values and biases can impact on a public protection investigation.


Indicative content reflects the College of Policing National Policing Curriculum stipulated for delivery at level 5 of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship as follows:
Criminology & Crime Prevention: 1.1 to 5.4 inclusive
Vulnerability & Risk: 1.1 to 3.2 inclusive
Public Protection: 1.1 to 1.7 and 3.1 to 3.2.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Pre-prepared learning material facilitated through use of Blackboard VLE , will be used to develop learners understanding the impacts of crime on society.

A module handbook and other detailed supportive material such as assessment briefings is available to learners and will set out requirements and expectations in more detail.

The module will be introduced during level 5 Policing practice & research methods module and will then be completed at the student's own pace using the lecture materials and tasks provided.

Although delivered at distance, pre-identified study time will be allocated in the Introduction to Policing Practice & Research Methods, Response, Roads & Policing Communities and Investigation & Intelligence Management modules, where academic support will be available.

MODULE ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Learner will critically evaluate a local policing problem and identity relevant criminological theories that relate to it. They will demonstrate their understanding by presenting these theories in a 2000-word academic report.
