Module Additional Assessment Details
1. Case Work Presentation: Students will be required to individually prepare and present on a topic of their choice evaluating the impact of legislation, policy or practice that they have utilised in the workplace relevant to complex investigation and/or intelligence management. Presentation will be delivered by a medium of the student’s choice and to an audience of peers and academic staff. The student will be questioned by a member of the teaching team – (LO’s 3,4,5).

2. Knowledge Test: Students will be required to take a knowledge test under examination conditions (1 hours) to test their knowledge and understanding of the key legislative and policy principles underpinning the conduct of complex crime investigation and intelligence management – (LO 1&2).

3. Reflective diary: will allow the student to critically analyse how intelligence and information is gathered and managed in a policing context. Students will show understanding of the topic and ability to critically consider how this could be viewed within the conducting of complex investigations. This assessment will address learning outcomes 1, 2, 3.

Module Indicative Content

This core conditional module provides the learner with advanced knowledge and understanding of complex investigation and/or intelligence management. The module provides a broad but integrated delivery of core skills and knowledge relating to these areas of employment with the police and focuses on areas, including use of the National Intelligence Model to manage local and force operations, covert investigations and the management of victims, witness and suspects in complex investigations.


This module incorporates all the learning outcomes and indicative content from the College of Policing, Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship Curriculum for the following areas:

The below is a brief summary of what the content includes:
Intelligence content includes:
• Use of the National Intelligence Model and the ways that it shapes the delivery of objectives at a local, force and national level;
• Examination of police operation(s) where information and intelligence were critical to the outcome, focusing on areas of good practice and areas of development;
• Methods of evaluation used before, during and at the completion of policing operations;
• The strategic impact of data breaches on police forces.

Investigation content includes:
• The nature and types of complex investigation;
• Key legislation, including that relating to the disclosure of unused material dictated by CPIA 1996;
• Management of victims, witnesses and suspects involved in complex investigations;
• Identification and use of internal and external experts/resources available for use to assist with live and cold case complex investigations;
• Strategies that may be required to support the investigation such as use of media and mass screening;
• Use of covert policing techniques in complex investigations and
• Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements.

Module Learning Strategies
This module utilises blended learning strategies, including the delivery of lectures (face to face and distance), small group tutorial sessions, face to face and online peer discussion together with digitally aided independent study. A total of 40 hours protected learning time will delivered over the course of the first week followed by a period of operational deployment in a work area associated with investigation and/or intelligence management. This period of operational deployment is utilised to undertake relevant work-based learning and guided independent study prior to completement of assessment at the end of the module.

Academic support (face to face and online) will be available throughout the module.

There will be regular formative knowledge checks and other sessions of formative assessment.
