Module Additional Assessment Details
1. The first assessment will be through the review of a relevant case study that will allow the student to consider and critically review counter-terrorism functions and the police response to terrorist incidents. This will assess learning outcomes 3 and 4

2. The reflective diary assessment will address learning outcomes 1 and 2. The reflective diary will allow the learner to demonstrate their understanding of vulnerability, safeguarding, risk and the criminal justice system and ability to apply this understanding to their experience of relevant policies, procedures and legislation.


Module Indicative Content
This module introduces the learner to the meaning and importance of recognising ‘vulnerability’ and supporting people who are at risk of harm, understanding ‘public protection’ policing and counter terrorism functions and the police response. It also explains the criminal justice system and associated legislation and processes.

This module incorporates all the learning outcomes and indicative content from the College of Policing Degree Holder Entry Programme Curriculum for the following areas:
Vulnerability and Risk
Sections 1,2,3
Public Protection
Sections 1 –4 inclusive
Counter Terrorism
Sections 1 and 2
Criminal Justice
Sections 1 – 6 inclusive

Appendix 1 details all the learning and indicative content covered in this module.


The below is a brief summary of what the content includes:
• Ethical and professional approaches to dealing with and safeguarding individuals who are vulnerable, including in a counter-terrorism context
• Critically reviewing the range of factors that can contribute to vulnerability
• Legislation, policies and ‘what works’ in relation to vulnerable people
• Communication skills to support a person who may be vulnerable
• Consequences of failure to share information including case studies
• Understanding ‘public protection’ and the appropriate response including the role of other agencies
• Counter terrorism policing including multi-agency work and initial actions at the scene of incidents
• Use of intelligence to counter terrorism
• Criminal Justice System and associated legislation, policies, procedures and practice
• Standards of policing adhered to throughout the criminal justice system
• Out of court disposal options and restorative justice
Module Learning Strategies
This module is taken either in rotation or in sequence after the Understanding Policing module. Learning for this module will be based around students committing 150 hours of study this being split between 35 hours of direct contact with teaching staff and 115 hours of independent study and work place learning.
Students will be taught in a mixture of lectures and tutorials.
