INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module introduces the learner to effective communication strategies in Policing and dealing with the media, before looking at leadership styles that relate to the role of constable. It will look at Policing as a Profession, Continuous Professional Development, and challenges facing policing in the 21st Century. Finally, the module introduces the learner to the meaning and application of coaching, mentoring, and assessment skills.
Indicative Content:
The strategic context of policing and relevant national policing strategies
The meaning of ‘profession’ and the role of the College of Policing in ‘professionalising’ policing
The use of media, including social media to engage with communities and promote police initiatives
The principles of a communication strategy and how to deal effectively with the media in a policing context
Key principles of leadership for police constables.
Explain the skills required to deliver coaching and mentoring and how this supports professional development.
Examine the principles of work-based assessment within policing
Examine the principles and practices of assessment within the police service in order to ensure consistent and professional standards.
Indicative content reflects the College of Policing National Policing Curriculum stipulated for delivery at level 6 of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship as follows:
Understanding the Police Constable Role (Advanced): 1.1 to 3.1 inclusive
Communication Skills: 1.1 to 3.3 inclusive
Leadership and Teamworking: 1.1 to 1.6 inclusive
College of Policing learning outcomes (Coaching and Mentoring): 1.1 to 4.3 inclusive.
ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Blog:
Learners are required to complete a written Blog that will focus on the professionalisation of policing and the use of media in engaging communities. The blog will be no longer than 2000 words.
Learning Outcomes 1 – 2.
Reflective Diary:
Students will complete a verbal reflective diary on their experiences of being coached, mentored, and tutored during the PEQF programme and identify lessons moving forward as they become independent leaders in policing.
Learning outcomes 3 – 4.

LEARNING STRATEGIES
Lectures, tutorials, and pre-prepared learning material facilitated through use of the Blackboard VLE and MS Teams, will be used, as appropriate, to develop learners and prepare them for the workplace. The delivery team will employ a range of learning and teaching methodologies which may include group work, problem-based learning, learner presentations, feedback, and online tutor/learner-led discussions. A blended approach to delivery will be taken and a mix of methods used for formative knowledge checks.
A module handbook and other detailed supportive material such as assessment briefings is available to learners and will set out requirements and expectations in more detail.
