ASSESSMENT DETAILS
An individual presentation (10 minutes) related to individual learning experiences during the module and whilst undertaking work experience focusing upon elements such as self-development, communication skills, working as a group member and presenting information (addressing LO 1 and 3)
(Weighted at 90%)
Completion of a work based log (mapping to LO 2) incorporating details of communication that contribute to effective group membership and problem solving within the workplace: pass/fail
(weighted at 10%)
Formative assessment details:
Students will work in small groups to explore cultural diversity within society and the skills required to communicate effectively with individuals from a range of diverse backgrounds. Each group will give a 10 minute presentation on their findings. Feedback will be given to students on an individual and group basis.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module seeks to prepare you with the essential personal and communication skills required to succeed in your learning at degree level and beyond.
During this module you will
Explore the importance of self-knowledge, learning and self-improvement,
Engage in self-assessment, self-motivation, independent thinking and learning, problem-solving and time management,
Explore the communication process and develop skills of listening, questioning, group working, accepting differences of opinion, and showing sensitivity towards others,
Identify and practice various methods of communication, e.g. meetings, letters, reports, telephone calls and e-mails etc., and develop knowledge of appropriate and inappropriate use of such methods,
Explore the differing values within a diverse cultural society and recognise cultural differences.

Code of Practice for Support Workers, and drawing on codes of conduct requirements from the health and social care professions for effective communication
Overcoming barriers to communication within the workplace
Formal and informal communication within the workplace
