This module will prepare you with the essential communication skills required to be effective and reflective communicator and to communicate successfully in the workplace. Engage in self-reflection, self-assessment, self-motivation, independent thinking and learning, problem-solving and time management to aid effective communication and inclusive team working in the workplace.
Explore and develop effective communication skills of listening, questioning, team working, accepting differences of opinion, and showing sensitivity towards others, vital skills for health and social care professionals.
Identify and practice various methods of inclusive online and face-to face communication within the workplace to enhance employability skills, e.g., meetings, agendas, minutes, letters, reports, telephone calls and e-mails etc., and develop knowledge of ethical and confidential use of such methods.
Explore equality and diversity within the context of conveying effective communication skills within the health and social care environment.
Presentation skills, role plays and mock vivas to enhance skills and reduce presentation anxiety.
Undertake 50 hours of negotiated work experience in a health and social care environment.
ASSESSMENT DETAILS
The assessment links to all the learning outcomes. The assessment will enable students to address each of the three learning outcomes. Each specific area will be weighted in such a way to enable students to succeed without fear of failure from one element.
Reflective log based on 50 hours in practice and learning experiences during the module using a model of reflective practice and supported by appropriate literature. Assesses written communication skills.
Oral presentation/interview (Viva) of the Reflective Log to assess communication skills. Assesses oral communication skills. 10-minutes individual oral presentation related to the Reflective Log followed by 5-minute questions.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (30¿hours)¿¿

You will attend lectures, workshops and sessions on key¿topics.¿There will be opportunities to participate¿in small groups to explore some of the key issues raised in lectures and undertake practical and scenario-based communication skills tasks and activities.
Guided Independent Study: (170¿hours)¿¿
50 hours: Independent reading - You will be expected to read the recommended reading, utilise the learning materials which you will have full access to via Blackboard and the library.
50 hours: work experience

70¿hours: Undertake the directed group work, necessary research and analysis and development of skills to inform formative and summative assessments Directed group work in preparation for formative assessment presentations
You will be expected to have made use of the relevant library resources, research and web-based sites to identify relevant academic texts and journal articles to support your work.
