This 20-credit module aims to address the current challenges for UK health and social care including personalisation, integrated care, duty of care, working across boundaries, public engagement, patient self-management, definitions of wellbeing, and the new commissioning landscape. It will enable learners to gain basic knowledge and understanding of: Health and Social Care related legislation such as the Health and Social Care Act 2012, The Care Act 2014, The HRA 1998, Equality Act 2010 and the UN Convention of the Rights of a Child. It will also allow students to gain a limited understanding of the parliamentary law-making process.
Students will learn about the structure of Health and Social Care sector in the UK today including: Integrated Care Systems (ICSs), Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), NHS Trusts and Local Authorities. They’ll discover how services are ‘commissioned’, how the private sector is utilised and the ethical issues that are linked to these decision-making bodies.
Students will gain an understanding of the term ‘personalisation’ and what it means in practice. Students will also have knowledge of multi-disciplinary working and the meaning of integrated care. This will incorporate the NHS Values of Care and the 6 Cs as well as the People and Community Board’s 6 principles of personalisation. They will also learn the importance of valuing diversity – personal, gender issues, cultural, religious and spiritual aspects in the context of personalisation and integrated care.
Finally, students will come to understand the work of NICE and other regulatory bodies such as the CQC.
ASSESSMENT DETAILS
The case study assesses all the learning outcomes and will focus on a service user with complex care needs. It will ask students to apply their knowledge and address issues such as:
How can legislation empower the service user, practitioner and foster excellent, high quality, compassionate care?
How the structure and integration of the health and care sector will promote integrated care but also acknowledge potential challenges.
Finally, discuss at least one ethical issue practitioners will face when providing care.
