Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to introduce you to the study, information and communication skills needed for the study and practice of healthcare and midwifery. The module will focus on three areas of learning:
Study skills: This module element will include a review of required literacy skills, academic writing, referencing and citation. You will then be introduced to the concept of self assessment and its role in developing your own learning for professional practice. Analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) will be discussed as an initial tool for self assessment of learning and development needs. Action planning will be discussed, including the formulation of action plans.
Information Literacy: You will be introduced to the use of information technology for identifying and accessing sources of good quality information including the development of a robust search strategy for accessing, obtaining, and using appropriate literature and the use of appropriate information technology skills to support the acquisition and dissemination of information e.g. word processing, Powerpoint, e mail, e - portfolio.
Communication skills: An introduction to the role and purpose of communication in effective healthcare and midwifery practice, together with an overview of the repertoire of skills used. The importance of courtesy, politeness and acknowledgement of others through verbal, written and electronic forms will be discussed.
Study skills: This module element will include a review of required literacy skills, academic writing, referencing and citation. Module Additional Assessment Details
Summative assessment: Essay covering Learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3.
This essay will be based on a SWOT analysis and action plan that you have completed which identifies a learning need relative to the development of your own communication skills and the appropriate opportunities to develop such learning.
The essay will contain an explanation of the importance of developing this communication skill for healthcare and midwifery practice and should clearly link to the SWOT analysis and action plan.
Formative assessment - preparation of
i) a SWOT analysis of personal study skills at the beginning of the course
and
ii) an action plan for one of the study skills identified which provides appropriate opportunities to develop such learning.
