Module Additional Assessment Details
A written assignment on the individual's own role in developing a `Gold Standard' of care for people with dementia within their context, resourced by their reading and reflection and evidenced by extracts from their portfolio (as an appendix) (Total 2000 words, 100% weighting assessess all LO's)
Additional Assessment Details (include formative feedback / assessment):
A portfolio of tasks based upon four successive modules, comprising in each case:
- A task related to the content of the video
- A self-assessment task
- An action plan for the student's area of work
The tasks assigned to each video to be submitted in turn for formative feedback and response
Module Indicative Content
The module is based around four videos developed in collaboration with the Gold Standard Foundation covering:
1. Introduction to dementia care
- What is dementia? The importance of improving care for people with dementia , learn more about the disease and the impact it has on a person.
- Person-centred care. The person-centred approach in dementia care- seeing the person behind the disease.
- Dignity. Ways of enhancing dignity, respect and spiritual care for people with dementia in your place of work.
2. Assessing hidden clinical needs
- Decline in dementia and recognising and responding to signs of deterioration.
- Pain in dementia- recognition, causes and management and the use of assessment tools
- Other symptoms Symptom control basics, and the impact of other co-morbid conditions.
3. Communicating well and assessing the needs and wishes of the person
- Communication. Effective ways to communicate and listen to people with dementia. .
- Advance Care Planning and Best Interest discussions for people with dementia and put these into practice
- Carers The particular importance of supporting carers, their needs and the significance of early loss and bereavement.
4. Reducing hospitalisation enabling more to live and die at home
- Coordination Enabling better coordinated cross boundary care and reducing crises
- Reducing hospitalisation. The importance of reducing hospitalisation in people with dementia enabling more to remain safely at home.
- Care of the dying to ensure a good death for people with dementia in their preferred place of choice .

60 hours Preparation of formative portfolio and response to feedback
40 hours Assignment, Reflection on practice
4 hours engaging in learning tasks after viewing of videos (minimum 60 minutes each) for formative feedback
