ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
An Individual Oral Presentation within the format of either a Poster Presentation OR Power Point Presentation Summative Assessment (100% Weighting, addressing all LO's) equating to 20 minutes duration.
The Presentation will be presented to their peers and the module team thereby demonstrating their learning and articulation around the concepts explored within the module.
The Presentation will include a short word processed accompanying rationale (maximum 500 words) with appropriate references that justify and support the focus of the Presentation.
Additional Assessment Details (include formative feedback / assessment):
The students will be expected to explore hypothetical scenario’s relevant to working with different age groups and differing complex needs of service users, patients/clients within the health and social care arena.
Participation within group work, work-shop ,peer group discussions and an asynchronous discussion on Blackboard will enhance the dissemination of the theoretical underpinning surrounding effective communication skills and the application of this into practice
Formative assessment preparation will include the completion of an Assignment Plan following group tutorials centred on the development of a plan for their presentation.
Additional individual formative assessment feedback will be relayed from the module leader after the student’s participation within the asynchronous discussion.

Topics include:
Theories and concepts concerning the process of effective communication within the health and social care environment.
Exploration of the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication skills and active listening,
Identification of the barriers to effective communication and recognition of adopting strategies and solutions in order to contribute to a therapeutic relationship with the service user/ patient/client.
The impact of the moral, professional and ethical issues encountered within a therapeutic relationship within the health and social care context, crucially employing aspects of respect, valuing, confidentiality, data protection and types of consent.
An awareness of basic counselling skills including the nature and purpose of counselling and exploring the concept of understanding the impact of loss, grief and bereavement.
The context of the service user experience relevant to service user/ patient/ client advocacy.
Theories and concepts concerning the demonstration of professionalism, interprofessional teamwork, interpersonal skills and self- awareness conducive and requisite for effective communication pathways within the health and social care sector
An introduction to equality and diversity within the context of conveying effective communication skills within the health and social care environment.
Presentation skills for oral summative assessments within academia.
Throughout this module the relevance of the (2015) Care Standards/Care Certificate underpinning employability within the Health and Social care environment will be emphasised.
Service user/Carers involvement will also be embraced to assist with contextualization of the module focus.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
This module is delivered by blended learning using Blackboard VLE
Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (63 hours)
33 hours lectures/tutorials/workshops
10 hours module/assessment support, which may be virtual or face to face
20 hours online lecture and interactive exercises and activities via Blackboard VLE
Guided Independent Study: (237 hours)
47 hours preparing for scheduled sessions, and follow up work including the completion of the formative assessment incorporating contextualizing and exploration of issues relevant to scenario’s of hypothetical service user patient/client interaction in order to maximize the learning opportunities and consolidate learning.
100 hours independent study and wider reading, including researching web based resources 90 hours assessment preparation
Verbal communication skills are developed throughout this module with an emphasis upon oral communication skills as appropriate to working within the health and social care sector and befitting the format of the summative assessment..
