Module Indicative Content
The politics of the health service and different ideological approaches to health service delivery including the origins of the health service, the Conservative use of the internal market and New Labour ideas concerning modernisation of health services.
An introduction to recent ideas on the nature of health policy with particular reference to Network Theories.
Policy making in the Department of Health.
Policy making at the local level and Lipsky's idea of "Street level bureaucracy"
The nature of power in the policy process.
The key challenges to health policy through an exploration of key policy documents from "The Health of the Nation" to "Choosing Health"
An exploration of why health is a key political issue.
The financing and organisation of the health service.
Module Additional Assessment Details
An essay of 2500 words on a pre-agreed policy issue. The student will develop the title of the essay which will be approved by the module tutor(s). (addressing all LO's)
Additional Assessment Details (including formative feedback / assessment:
Formative feedback will be through tutorials centred on the development of their essay plan for the summative assignment.
