Module Details
INDICATIVE CONTENT
Over 12 weeks you will focus on what is meant by simulation based education and what the drivers for change are from your own and other student’s contexts and experience. Examples from aviation, defence and health will be used to illustrate how simulation based education has grown and how regulators and professional societies have influenced its’ adoption. Safety and human factors will be introduced and how different industries have adopted a range of strategies. You will be encouraged to keep a reflective log and by interacting with each other and the module team will gain an insight into the contemporary issues today including ethics, gender, and culture.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Formative

Record using any media provided available within Staffordshire Digital Technologies an oral presentation about your definition of simulation within your sphere linking to the literature and module materials (maximum time 5 minutes ) and comment critically on at least two 2 other presentations from the group within the forum on Blackboard Ultra.

Links to learning outcome (LO) 1 as this provides an understanding of the learner’s context of simulation based education (SBE) within their workplace or professional area. Presenting and hearing other presentations will assist learners in beginning to understand their own identity and agency and consider their journey- LO2. Commenting on peers’ presentations will allow students to consider simulation based education within a different lens – LO3.

Summative

Based on your reflective log, and work to date including feedback by peers and tutors on the week 5 pre-recorded oral presentation identify and discuss 2- 3 contemporary issues that are driving the adoption of simulation based education in your context supported by the literature and linking to the module material. Write an essay of 1500 words with a 5 minute ( minimum) -7 minute ( maximum) presentation e.g., narrated PowerPoint, MS Streams etc, the assessment brief will provide further guidance.

Links to LO2 as the learners will be able to reflect on their starting position, their perspective at week 5 and how they may have changed based on working through the module materials and linking with their peers. Examining simulation based education in the wider context will inform their understanding of contemporary issues within their own context and developing their identity as simulation educators– LO1, LO3.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Blackboard Ultra will be used as the learning management system (LMS)

Distance learning using synchronous and asynchronous tools including Microsoft (MS) Office Suite of Tools, specifically MS Teams, MS Sway, MS SharePoint, MS Stream, and Flip, Wakelet and CAE Learning Space.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Debate the contemporary issues and drivers for change for simulation based education within your field of practice.

2. Reflect upon your professional identity and agency and create a personalised development plan within the context of simulation based education.

3. Critique how simulation based education is being adopted across a range of disciplines and contexts.
RESOURCES
All students need to have access to a computer device (not supplied by the University) and internet access.

WEB DESCRIPTOR
This module provides you with an introduction to what is meant and understood by simulation globally and how it can inform teaching, learning, assessment and change within your field of practice. This module examines simulation from aviation, health and other contexts and what drivers from a micro, meso and macro level have introduced simulation based education . Contemporary issues will be explored including simulation in relation to ethics, culture, and gender. The module will aid you in transitioning to master’s level work with the formative and summative assignments designed to aid you in your presentation and writing skills.
