Students must be a registered nurse or registered paramedic where forensic examination of victims of sexual assault are part of their professional role and have access to University approved clinical preceptors within their own workplace

Students must demonstrate recent academic study at degree level or higher

Assessment is in two parts both elements need to gain a pass for successful completion of the module.

A 3,500 word critical reflection (written assignment) on an aspect of forensic clinical practice (contributes to meeting LO's 1, 3, 4 & 5) 100% weighting

Achievement of the Clinical Learning Outcomes. Weighting 0% Pass/Fail (Meets LO 2)

This module will focus on the application of theory into clinical practice by a combination of class based teaching and supervised, assessed clinical practice. As the students will already be working in a forensic environment where forensic examinations of either victims (SARCs) are undertaken, the students will identify a mentor\preceptor within the workplace who meets the UKAFN criteria for Forensic Clinical preceptor. The student will work through a competency based document where individual competencies of their specialist area of Sexual Assault, will be signed off by their assessor who will assess the level of competence and whether the student has met the UKAFN Standard for Forensic Practitioners Training. The emphasis of the class room sessions will provide an opportunity for students to meet to discuss their progress through the clinical module and taught sessions on how they can utilise the reflection of their practice to demonstrate how they have applied their new knowledge and skills into practice. The competency areas to be assessed will include:

Examining alleged post pubertal victims of sexual assault
Ability to take sexual history
Therapeutic after care; Hep vaccination, PEP, bacterial prophylaxis, ECP, counselling
STI chain of evidence
Collection of forensic samples
Assess the risk of suicide or self harm
Screening individuals for mental and physical health - mental and physical assessments
Documentation of precise injuries without interpretation
Documentation - accurate record keeping skills
Assessment of drug and alcohol
Awareness of prescribing and\or dispensing medication\Local PGDs
Assess ability to provide valid consent
Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults issues
