Small Group Presentation 15-20 Minutes (80%) (Learning Outcomes 1-4)
Reflective Account (20%) (Learning Outcomes 1-4)
1. Prepare a presentation entitled 'Health Problem affecting Children' (Learning Outcomes 1 - 4)
Choose a specific health problem from the following categories:
Acute conditions e.g. measles
Chronic conditions e.g. Juvenile onset diabetes
Chromosomal abnormality e.g. Down's syndrome
Infection or infestation e.g. scabies, head lice
N.B. The class group should cover all the categories
Prepare a group presentation with appropriate handouts detailing:
The causes of the condition
Treatment and care of children suffering from the condition
Where appropriate, analysis of data relating to causes/factors affecting child health.
Support available for the child and their family and carers.
Strategies that can be applied to prevent disease or minimise the effects of diseases in childhood including health education
References to theory/academic sources.
2. An individual written evaluation/reflective account of personal learning as a result of the presentation. Please include how the knowledge gained from at least one of the other presentations could also influence your work-based practice.
Module Indicative Content
This module will include:
Health Education/Health Promotion
Approaches to Health Education
Government initiatives and current practice
Causes of ill health - genetic, micro-biological, environmental
Prevention of ill health - immunisation, screening, diet and exercise
Socio-economic factors affecting health
Common childhood illnesses - chronic, acute, long term
Effects of ill health on all aspects of behaviour/development
Supporting the needs of family/relatives in dealing with the sick child
Roles and responsibilities of Early Years workers - informing parents, care, medication, care settings
Module Learning Strategies
Critical analysis of current definitions of health education/health promotion
Discussion on a wide range of topics surrounding this module
Group work providing verbal/written conclusions on the discussions
Applying theory to practice both verbally and in written format
Small group research - effects of illness on children and families, how to support children and parents
Guest speakers - Health Promotion, Community Paediatric Nurse, Health Visitor
Case Studies particularly on illness and recognising/treating it
Presentations (to aid confidence, communication, applying knowledge)
Video's - to use in discussion or critical analysis
Analytical assignment writing - giving information and analysing the content
Module Resources
Highly equipped early years specialised teaching and learning rooms, including Interactive Whiteboards (Internet and network access, with DVD/VCR and sound system) and to the library, study areas including the Link Centre and computer rooms.
