Module Details
Module Indicative Content
This module provides students with an opportunity to explore basic theories and concepts in counselling. A number of theoretical models will be introduced, for example psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, and humanistic models. Students will also begin to place counselling in an historical and social context and will consider ethical and professional issues in counselling. The evidence base for counselling will be explored, utilising both historical and current research paradigms. Attention will be given to the application of theories to counselling practice.

Module Special Admissions Requirements
Be registered on a Psychology award.
Module Learning Strategies
A series of 12 lectures integrated with discussions, debates, interactive activities. In classes about half of the time will be spent on lectures (12 hours) and half of the time on other class activities (12 hours). Formative learning will take place through class based activities, for example, question and answer sessions and discussion of reading materials, discussion of interactive activities and practice exam questions. The remainder of the study hours on the module will be spent preparing for class based sessions and in preparation for the examination.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Examination 1 1/2 hours. The examination will consist of both short answer questions and an essay question, to assess learning outcomes 1-4.

Formative assessment will be in the form practice exam questions which can be prepared at home and discussed in the class activity sessions.
