Module Learning Strategies
Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (49 hours)
There will be seven full day teaching sessions during which the following strategies will be used
Behaviourist, cognitivist and constructivist teaching approaches
Review of therapy videos and role played demonstrations - to provide examples of the application of different approaches
Use of case studies to promote group discussion - students will be expected to draw on examples from their own clinical practice
Skills practice role play with feedback - participants will have the opportunity to obtain formative feedback on their performance during role play sessions
Guided Independent Study: (101 hours)

Module Indicative Content
The significance of the relationship in psychological therapy and the conditions necessary to establish an effective working relationship. Basic counselling skills including active listening. Ethical considerations in psychological therapy. Goal setting and problem solving within psychological therapy. Principle of stepped care - what can be undertaken at the different levels? The fundamental principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Identifying thoughts, feelings, behaviours and understanding the relationship between these within a CBT maintenance cycle.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Satisfactory demonstration of active listening skills within a role played clinical scenario lasting 15 minutes - 50% weighted assessing LO's 2 and 3
Individuals will need to demonstrate appropriate maintenance of eye contact and non-verbal listening skills such as facial expression and head nodding. They will also need to demonstrate verbal skills including paraphrasing and reflection and to show that they are able to greet the client and to end the session appropriately
Open Book written examination lasting 1 hour in which satisfactory performance on the following must be demonstrated - 50% weighted assessing LO's 1, 4 and 5
Critical reflection on performance within the role played clinical scenario above including the identification of strengths and areas for improvement
Knowledge and understanding of the key principles underpinning psychological therapy with individuals with mental health difficulties
Ability to analyse clinical material and to form recommendations for future action
Effective written communication
Both elements of assessment must be passed
