This module will introduce the theory underpinning qualitative research approaches and the design of qualitative research projects. Students will explore a range of qualitative research designs and methods of data collection and how these can be applied to addressing research questions, while acknowledging relevant ethical considerations. Students will be introduced to the process of analysing qualitative data using thematic analysis and will begin to develop a critical awareness of approaches to ensure quality and rigor in qualitative enquiry. Students will employ this new knowledge and skills to design and justify methodological choices for a qualitative research project.

Formative assessment
Students can access formative feedback and guidance on assessment planning regularly throughout the module during workshops and drop in sessions. Formative feedback will be given by the tutor and peers during class discussions.

44 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activity (e.g. lectures, seminars and drop in assessment support)

Lectures will introduce theory underpinning qualitative research approaches, designs and methods.
Lecture content will be expanded upon during applied practical workshops. Students will have opportunity to use various qualitative psychological research methods and critically reflect on their use and ethical considerations.
Drop-in sessions will be dedicated to student assessment planning with tutors available for support and feedback.
