Module Details
LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Demonstrate competent practice in the use of a range of counselling skills and interventions for working in a process and experientially orientated way with clients.


2. Critically evaluate strategies and interventions employed to address a variety of client issues and reflect on the impact of supervision on client work.

3. Demonstrate critical understanding of the importance of continuing professional development for counsellors and devise a personal development plan to support future development.

Indicative Content
This module builds on the previous Developing Counselling Skills module studied in Year 1 and aims to support you in the development of your counselling practice in placement. You will consider ethical practice, referral procedures and the use of supervision. You will be required to submit audio-tapes of your client work to the PAD group for peer feedback, this will support a continuous development of a professional attitude towards your work.

You will compile a portfolio of evidence, based on your placement practice, which will include:

¿ 2 supervisor reports one at 50 hours and one at 100 hours of client hours

¿ Personal development plan

Learning Strategies
The following strategies will be adopted to ensure that you have a supportive teaching and learning environment mindful of a full range of learning styles:

Work Related Learning – You will be required to reflect on values, practices, assumptions and transferable skills. Activities will help you to establish connections between your academic skills and issues within the subject specific area.

Lectures – You will be given formal lectures which will provide theoretical underpinning on key counselling concepts.

Tutorials –You will be given the opportunity to discuss work-related and academic concerns in small group tutorials and individual tutorials. This will support the development of theoretical understanding.

Group seminars – where assigned readings can be discussed informally, questions can be raised and debates conducted.

Guided reading and supported self-study –you will be provided with booklists and reading tasks in order to enable you to engage with relevant and appropriate debates.

This module will also provide opportunities for you to:

Adiditional Assessment Details
Task 1: Submit a 45 minute audio-taped recording of one client from placement to demonstrate safe ethical practice, as well as the use of a range of counselling skills and interventions for working in a process and experientially orientated way with clients. 0% weighted Pass/Fail. Meets LO1

Task 2: 1500 word critical reflection demonstrating knowledge and understanding of safe ethical practice, as well as evaluation, of areas of strengths and areas for development, in the use of a range of counselling skills and interventions for working in a process and experientially orientated way with clients. 0% weighted Meets LO1

Task 3: Construct a reflective case study based on working with one client over 8-10 sessions weighted at 100%. Meets LO's 2 and 3 2500 words
Case study presentation – 500 words
Critical evaluation of interventions and therapeutic process- 1000 words
Reflection on level of practice and professional development – 500 words

You will compile a portfolio of evidence demonstrating work based counselling experience gained at your placement including:

¿ 2 supervisor reports one at 50 hours and one at 100 hours of client hours

All elements must be passed to achieve the module.

Formative learning:
Client work will be assessed through clinical supervision where feedback on strengths and areas for development will be given. The supervisor will provide a written report on the student¿s client work at 50 Hours and 100 Hours of practice. This will form part of the placement portfolio.

Formative feedback from peers and tutors will be an essential component of the PAD groups.

Formative feedback will also involve group tutorials centred on the development of a plan for their work.
