The module examines children's making and understanding of pictures, as well as relating the research findings to more general developmental, cognitive, clinical, aesthetic, educational and cross-cultural issues in child development. Examples:
Development: The developmental pattern of children's drawings of realism and expression, and factors that explain such developments.
Cognitive: The relationship between production and comprehension, understanding the dual nature of pictures, drawings as measures on internal representations, drawings as memory aids.
Clinical: Can drawings be used to assess maladjustment?
Aesthetic: Children's expressive drawings and their understanding of expression in drawings and art.
Culture and Education: Differences in drawings and art teaching programmes across cultures.
Module Learning Strategies
In each lecture/discussion session we will discuss material relating to a particular topic, with tasks/questions to complete by the students. Examples of the student tasks include (i) interpretating drawings from a variety of theoretical standpoints, (ii) critically commenting upon studies, and (iii) suggesting future research lines.
In the first seminar you will be presented with an overview of the topic, shown a video on children's drawings and told about the requirements of the group presentation for the second seminar. In the second seminar you will participate in a group presentation of a journal article and be informed about the assessment criteria for the critical review. In the third seminar there will be an open question and answer session and an opportunity to discuss your plan for the critical review with your tutor.
In your independent study you will (i) read some key articles/ book chapters on each of the 10 topic area to give you a broad overview of the area covered by the module, (ii) read extensively on one topic area in preparation for your assessment (critical review), (iii) write a critical review on one topic area (questions provided by tutor). A module handbook will be provided giving a short summary of each topic and a large number of references relating to each topic. You will be expected to do your own literature searches (Web of Sciences, PsychInfo, etc.).
