Module Indicative Content
The Personal and Professional Development 1 module provides students with the opportunity to reflect on their personal and professional development during their training to become professional counsellors. The module focuses on increasing self-awareness hand in hand with self-acceptance. The emphasis is on personal learning within the group and the development of self and process reflexive capacity. The module does not involve taught material. A personal development group will be facilitated by a staff member. There will be guidance on the development of the portfolio, in particular the personal and professional development log.
Module Learning Strategies
This module will be incorporated in weekly 6 hour sessions over 30 weeks, two one day workshops and residential weekend (the sessions incorporate elements from all modules). This module includes group discussion, self-reflection and individual discussions with peers and tutors. Self-directed reading (including some tutor recommendations) will assist students in addressing weaker areas in self-development.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Summative assessment
A 2500 word reflexive summary of the personal development log to be submitted, weighted at 100%. To pass this module the student must also submit all parts of the personal and professional development PORTFOLIO, which includes:
- An on-going personal development log to be kept throughout the year
- A record of client hours and dates (where applicable as some students may not start placement until year 2)
- A record of supervision hours and dates (supervision hours at a ratio of at least 1:4, and no less than 1.5 hours per month regardless of contact hours) (where applicable as some students may not start placement until year 2)
- A record of any training relating to counselling outside the University (e.g. at placement)
- A contract between Staffordshire University counselling tutor team, placement counselling organisation, supervisor and student (where applicable as some students may not start placement until year 2)
- Evidence of BACP membership
This will require students to:
1. Critically evaluate their learning and development in both the professional and personal spheres. Students may use a variety of media for their portfolio, including written work, pictures, artwork.
Formative assessment
Students will be required to show their personal development log to tutors on at least one occasion during the module and tutors will give feedback on whether the personal development log shows the level of critical evaluation and of self-acceptance required of students who wish to be professional counselling practitioners
