INDICATIVE CONTENT
The aim of this module is to help you to be successful in Higher Education. The module will focus on five areas of learning:
Study skills: This module element will include a review of required literacy skills, academic writing, referencing and citation. You will be helped to identify your current level in relation to these skills and to identify ways that you can progress to the next level.
Information Literacy: You will be introduced to the use of information technology for identifying and accessing sources of good quality information including the development of a robust search strategy for accessing, obtaining, and using appropriate literature and the use of appropriate information technology skills to support the acquisition and dissemination of information e.g. word processing, Power-point, e mail.
Communication skills: An introduction to the role and purpose of communication skills (verbal, written and electronic) within Higher Education, together with an overview of the repertoire of skills used.
Assessing the nature and validity of evidence: The role of evidence in modern health care and the exploration of whether the study of health is an art or a science. You will examine what constitutes evidence, how this is decided upon and the limitations of evidence.
The role of values in health care: You will be introduced to the concept of reflection and encouraged to reflect on your own values in relation to health care. You will then explore how human values and beliefs affect behaviour and provision of health related services and the interpretation of the evidence base. This will include a reflection on recent reports of poor practice and an exploration of psychological processes that lead to people abandoning respect for individuals and their diverse needs.
