Module Learning Strategies
9 weekly activities with tasks that will deliver the learning outcomes of the activity. These tasks will be carried out individually or as part of a small group. The assessment of the module will allow you to develop the skills introduced to you via content and task related activity in a specific and chosen area related to physical activity and special groups/populations.

Additional Assessment Information:
Students will be required to complete 1 piece of summative assessment:

Produce a poster or leaflet that would be suitable for promoting physical activity in either;

a) Older people > 65yrs of age living in the community, or
b) Children aged 11-16 yrs old

This should provide a written rationale with attention to scientific evidence underpinning your resource and how it is specifically targeted to your particular group. 1500 words max. LO 1-2.

Students will be provided with formative assessment and feedback.
Module Resources
PC (Windows 98 or better/ Macintosh equivalent) with internet access and CD-ROM drive. (Preferably Microsoft Office 97 or better), a web browser (Netscape or Explorer 4.0 or higher) together with permission to download software/ install applications programs.


Remote access to appropriate Library facilities.
Module Indicative Content
The promotion of physical activity for different populations will vary according to factors such as; age, culture and religious beliefs. This module will focus on physical activity for the following groups; children and young people, older adults, women, low socio-economic groups and various ethnic populations. E.g. the increase in childhood obesity and recommendations for physical activity, the role of physical activity in older adults for falls prevention, physical activity in women from South Asian ethnic groups etc. The differing health problems of these groups/populations will be discussed and physical activity issues which are relevant to these illustrated by case studies.

An optional 1-day workshop will be run at the end of the module which will include guest speakers, discussion groups and presentation of case studies.
