Module Additional Assessment Details
(1) Written plan of a research project worth 50% equating to 1500 words (LOs 1,2)
(2) Powerpoint presentation summarising key features of a research plan worth 20%. (LOs 1,3)
(3) Completion of a team project and written reflection worth 30% equating to 15000 words (LO 4)
PASS CRITERIA
Evidence of understanding of fundamental concepts. Able to represent plans and ideas in a coherent manner through a variety of different formats e.g. written, on-line discussion etc. Working beyond the tutor given material with appropriate use of relevant procedures and examples.
Tasks completed satisfactorily.
MERIT CRITERIA
Showing breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding. Able to represent plans and ideas in an accurate clear and coherent manner with appropriate supporting evidence. Good synthesis and evaluation.
Tasks of overall good quality.
DISTINCTION CRITERIA
Substantial evidence of independent and critical thinking. Plans and ideas represented in an accomplished manner, with an evaluation of conflicting arguments, conclusions well presented and supported by evidence and extensive and appropriate incorporation of primary literature. Module Learning Strategies
The module will be delivered via Blackboard and is organised around 8 topics delivered sequentially over 9 weeks.
1.Nature of Research and literature appraisal 2. Experimental design, sampling, data definition and statistics 3. Project write up ? presenting your findings. 4. Principles and Practices of Project Management 5. Project Management and Teams. 6. Planning and execution. 7. Completion and Evaluation. 8. Case study Examples and Reflection.
Each activity will commence with tutor developed introductory material using a range of formats appropriate to the topic area. This material will then be followed up by a series of weekly tasks that will deliver the learning outcomes of the activity. These tasks will be carried out individually or as part of a small group. The assessment of the module will allow you to develop the skills introduced to you via content and task related activity in a specific and chosen area related to sport & exercise science. The assessment consists of 3 elements. A written research project plan (50%) with an accompanying PowerPoint presentation (20%) and a completed on-line group project, with reflection (30%).
Module Indicative Content
This module enables you to develop and enhance your research skills and learn about effective project management.
The module will initially cover the fundamental and generic research skills that are required, but in the context of Sport & Exercise Science. This material will include understanding the nature of research, evaluating sources of information, research and experimental designs, sampling and evaluation, data definition and statistical analysis, scientific writing and presentation of research findings in a variety of formats. Project management outlines the mechanics of how to manage projects including idea development, team assembly and leadership, planning, making it happen, project completion and evaluation. Reference will also be made to the essential role of ethics, health & safety and project costing. Case studies of research, clinical trials and project management will be examined from within Sport & Exercise Science. Module participants will develop and design a research project and be involved in on-line project management.
